LATEX STRONG

An SBR integral liquid cement additive

The Product

POWER LATEX is a styrene-butadiene rubber(SBR) copolymer latex, specially formulated for usage as a liquid additive to impart and enhance the desirable characteristics of all cement mortars. The major advantages of dosing any cementicious composition with POWER LATEX are given below:
• earlier hardening
• improves flexibility
• reduces shrinkage
• prevents bleeding
• lower water-cement ratio
• increases durability and toughness
• high resistance to water penetration
• good abrasion resistance
• good frost resistance and resistance to salt permeation
• good resistance to many chemicals and mineral oils
• excellent adhesion to steel and concrete, also adheres well to brick, glass, asphalt, wood, expanded polystyrene and most building materials
• prolonged corrosion protection
• similar thermal expansion and modulus properties to concrete (unlike resin mortars and primers)
• non-toxic
• can be used with potable water
• more economical than epoxy or polyester resin mortar.

Application areas

1. Concrete repair
2. Floor screeds and toppings
3. External rendering
4. Waterproofing and tanking
5. Fixing slip bricks and tiles
6. Corrosion protection of steel

Advantages

1. Flexible, protective and anticorrosive coating for mild steel and concrete structures.
2. Protects all such structures in contact with water from water ingress.
3. Provides excellent resistance to impact, thermal shock and abrasion.
4. Cures to a hard, smooth and flexible surface resistant to salt water, oil, acid, alkali, crude oil and minerals.

Application Methodology

Surface preparation:
1. Surfaces to which POWER LATEX is to be applied should be clean, sound and dust free. Remove all laitance, oil, grease, mould or curing compound from concrete surfaces using wire brush etc.
2. Ensure that reinforcing steel is clean and free from grease, oil, scale and rust.
3. While repairing damaged concrete, cut off damaged portions to sound backing level.
Bonding slurry preparation:
1. Wet down absorbent surfaces, such as concrete, brick, stone, etc, ensuring that they are saturated but free from surface water. Prepare a bonding slurry of 1.5 to 2 parts cement to 1 part POWER LATEX, mixed to a lump free creamy consistency.
2. Using a stiff brush, work the bonding slurry well into the damp surface ensuring that no pinholes are visible. Do not apply bonding slurry at a thickness in excess of 2mm.
3. If a second coat is necessary, it must be applied after the first coat is touch dry. The second coat must be applied at right angles to the first one to ensure complete coverage. [ Coverage: 20 kg of POWER LATEX mixed with 50kg of OPC Type I cement will give creamy slurry to cover approximately 20 square meters of substrate depending upon surface texture and thickness applied.]
Mixing:
Charge the mixer with the required quantity of sand and cement and premix for 1 minute. Add POWER LATEX and mix for 2 minutes only, to avoid excessive air entrapment and immediately start addition of water slowly, until the required consistency is achieved.
Application:
1. After mixing, POWER LATEX modified mixes should be laid over the wet bonding slurry, well compacted and struck off to level. It may then be trowelled to the required finish using steel trowel.
2. Screeds, patches, etc., based on POWER LATEX modified cements, can be laid 6 – 60 mm thick.
Curing:
Correct curing of POWER LATEX modified mixes is important. Moisture cure for 24 hours and then allow it to dry out slowly. Note that initial curing is necessary to provide good curing conditions for the hydration of the Portland cement, then the Latex mortar must be allowed to dry out to permit the latex particles to join together to form the continuous films and strands.
Handling precaution:
1. POWER LATEX is non-toxic but ingestion is to be avoided. Any splash to the skin must be washed with water. If contact with eyes occurs, wash well immediately with water and seek medical advice. Rubber hand gloves are to be worn while handling.
2. While mixing and applying POWER LATEX, tools and skin contacts are to be cleaned by water.
